2008 started differently than I had anticipated, but isn’t that the way it usually happens? I was ready to go for that world title, but was injured early in the season (the third event) with a broken collar bone. I had surgery and had to sit out for 2 months. Being out for two months while the top 45 bull riders are riding made me anxious to get back as soon as possible.
I came back in April to Albuquerque, New Mexico and two events to get into the top 35 to avoid being cut off of the Built Ford Tough (televised) tour. I was somewhere around 38th, so the pressure was on. I tried to put all the pressure aside, but it was still in the back of my mind. I kept thinking of the verse in the Bible that says, “be anxious for nothing, but in all things, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6,7)
It took me a few events to get back into the “riding mode,” but I eventually got back to feeling good and riding like I should. Slowly I began to climb the points standings and make the money I needed to qualify for the World Finals.
I give God all the praise for allowing me to ride in the PBR and make a living to support my family. I feel good about my year considering I was out for about 10 events and still able to get into the tenth position. I guess my encouragement would be to make your goals, but always trust God to do what HE wants to do. Our plans are not as important as God’s plans. Our Father knows what is best for us, so trust Him and take it one day at a time.
God bless you and your family this Holiday Season!
